This is a psychoeducational group for parents of young children.
Parents may
be self-referred or court ordered. This is not a drop-in group.
A pre-interview
is required for attendance. Class size is limited.
The class deals with issues around parenting skills. We are not
a parental stress
group, although working with stress may be part of the parenting issues
discussed.
The group is instructional and discussion based. Participants
share parenting
concerns and resolution tactics. Structured training in skill building
is provided.
This group is designed to provide parents with an understanding of
themselves
as parents, of their children, and of the complex relationship that exists
between
the two. Issues discussed in group include understanding a child's
motivation to
behave and misbehave, emotional and mental development in children, becoming
a responsible parent, encouragement as a means of building self esteem,
communication and listening skills, and the natural and logical consequence
approach to discipline and building family life. We also cover many
special
interest issues, such as single parenting, parenting in recovery, educating
children,
breaking the abuse cycle, sex education and sexual abuse education, cultural
influences in parenting styles, resources for parents, coping with stress,
and others.
The class meets weekly for ninety minutes. Attendance for 10
consecutive weeks
is required for certification. Certification is provided after completion
of the full
ten weeks.
